[I] Firefly/Serenity movie [message #274147] Fr, 26 Mai 2006 12:01
Louise Mac Mahon
Some time ago I think I saw the Serenity movie, one of those very tired
stuporous viewings so I can't really make critical comment. Other half has
bought the series of Firefly on dvd and we watched #1 last night. Am I
correct in suspecting that the movie is a sort of synopsis of the series? I
can't remember it terribly well but probably enought to totally spoiler the
series. Mixed feelings about this, can something be attractive and boring at
the same time? I feel it should engaging me, I love space operas and pretty
girls and boys and goodies and baddies; but last night I actually didn't
watch the end of the ep decided I needed to sleep more, not a good omen.

Not exactly. The very first part of the film is a sort of synopsis of
Simon and River's part in the series, looking back at their backstory.
The rest of the film moves on from the series (and in my opinion, is
quite a lot different from the series in subtle ways).

No worries there - Serenity the film will not spoiler the series in any
way. Well...having said that, there was one major happening in the
film that did kind of affect the last two episodes of the series for
me. I had two episodes to go when I found out this particular spoiler
about the film, and I think I would have enjoyed those episodes more
had I not found out about it. But I certainly wouldn't say that the
film totally spoilers the series at all.

Well, it's not going to appeal to everyone, but different episodes may
appeal to different people. For instance, I really like 'War Stories'
and 'Our Mrs Reynolds', but didn't find 'Trash' quite so good.

Firefly got cancelled after 14 episodes (pity), and I got the feeling
that the movie tried to wrap things up a bit.

You should know that the film had a grimmer tone than the series did. A lot
has happened between the end of the series and the beginning of the film.
Having seen the film, you won't be surprised at some of the developments as
they come along, but because it was cancelled so quickly, the story arcs
had barely started so most of what you will see in the episodes is
character-driven story, rather than arc-driven plot liable to spoilage.

You should also know that slightly more than half the people I've
introduced Firefly to haven't liked the pilot episode much, but most have
been hooked from episode 2 onwards. Personally I was hooked from the moment
I saw Wash with his dinosaurs...

'War Stories' is definitely one of my favouries (and most people's it
seems). I also like all the flashbacks from 'Out of Gas', and I really
like the pilot ('Serenity') and 'Ariel' a lot. And 'Jaynestown'. And
'Our Mrs Reynolds'. And 'Trash'. And all of them, actually. Although
'Heart of Gold' probably wasn't quite as brilliant as the others.

I even liked a film a lot, especially the way [SPOILER] [SPOILER]ed,
although a lot of people were quite upset by it.

I really liked Trash. How could you not like an episode that started and
ended with Nathan Fillion butt-naked?

A Washism!

I met the dinosaurs before I even saw any episodes.

The other great thing about Firefly is that it is wonderfully
quoteable. Such as:

"Oh! That was bracing. They don't like it when you shoot at them.
I worked that out myself."

Zoe: "Preacher, don't the Bible have some pretty specific things to
say about killing?
Book: "Quite specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzier on the subject
of kneecaps"

Then there's always Wash. "Mine is an evil laugh."

That's even better in the context of the previous lines:

World-weary soldier, Corporal Zoe is quietly talking to raw private while
they hide in some ruins...
"First rule of battle little one, don't let 'em know where you are."
Enter Sergeant Mal, running backwards, shooting his machine gun, yelling,
"I'm here! I'm right here! Woohoo!"
Zoe: "'Course, there are other schools of thought."

>Zoe: "Preacher, don't the Bible have some pretty specific things to
>say about killing?
>Book: "Quite specific. It is, however, somewhat fuzzier on the subject
>of kneecaps"

The visual jokes are good too. The captain's been captured, it's the big
"we're all going to get tough and go and save him" scene, but because it's
a Joss Whedon production you know something's going to be turned on its
head. So as Wash poses, cocks his gun and delivers the dramatic, "We don't
leave anyone behind" line, his gun is a tiny little thing that would fit in
a woman's purse...

>Then there's always Wash. "Mine is an evil laugh."

I thought that was very Eddie Izzardish.

Just as funny is the cast commentary on that episode, where Nathan
Fillion (Mal) and Alan Tudyk (Wash) are both laughing at the size of
the gun.

Well, the main joke is that the rich girl has no idea what a
burger even *is*. The bit that everyone hear is commenting,
though, on is that the wee girl playing with the plastic
dinosaurs is enacting (word for word) a scene from the Firefly
pilot in which Wash is likewise playing with plastic
dinosaurs.

I watched the pilot last night, and for the first time, too; and wasn't
"space western" obvious, Louise? Someone took the slogan "Space - The
Final Frontier" to a new level. The soundtrack as well as the customs

Clearly set in a post-Space War of Northern Aggression; all that was
missing was the Feds (sic!) being called damnyankees.

And that's one of the least brilliant episodes. The others are even
better. This may be the only TV series ever to have no "okay" or "so-so"

Except that in Men in Black Will Smith complains about the size of his gun,
and it's actually a very powerful gun. So it's exactly the opposite, in
fact.

My only defence is that I was relaxed and horizontal at the time, not when I

Someone took the slogan "Space - The

> should have been a hint ;)

Yeah yeah, obvious now. Mind you a Cooderish soundtrack has been used on all
sorts of drama, though not period costume I grant you. I did notice the
"ain't" and general cowboy language register, but I put it down to a
rendering of exotica where they decided not to use standard American but
picked something else pretty much randomly, like the Irish accents on
Alexander.

Um ... sort of 3 times a week IMHO
I believe it's Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday

Absolutely!

And I called my husband in to see that cartoon and
gleefully said - "Look, look isn't that GREAT!!"

To which my husband said - having read it
carefully a couple of times .. "What am I looking for?"

In disbelief I pointed it out and he sad ..."So?"

*that's* when I explained and he grinned at me
saying "Congratulations - you out dorked me!"

*stunned silence from yours truly :-))*
(which is NOT usual ;)

I had the movie for my birthday (OK I saw Summer Glau on the cover and
thought "OK let's have a look at that one!"). Loved the movie so much I
bought the series on DVD the next day. I'll have to watch it again now
with the cast commentaries as has been mentioned.

The humour above all else is what I love about it:

Mal: We've just found some local colour

(ie getting seven shades of ... kicked out of them, asking Wash for help)

Kind regards,

Julian
